20 Jaw-Droppingly Weird Laws That Still Exist In America

14. Arkansas - It Is Illegal To Pronounce The State's Name Incorrectly

Illinois Dog Cigar
Warner Bros. Television Distribution

Law's Origin: 1860

Risk of Prosecution: Ugly Looks

Oh sure, how fair of the state with the ridiculous sounding name (should be pronounced Ar-Kan-Sas like it's spelled) to make a law forcing people to say Ar-Can-Saw. What if you were just passing through and happened to be pulled over by the local Sheriff? Well, he'd have to be a very old sheriff. The law comes from Arkansas' state laws, formed over a hundred years ago.

If you ever make it across the pond and you're traveling through Arkansas just make sure to say the state's name in conversation both slowly and carefully. Better yet, if you ever get to visit America, try avoiding Arkansas completely.
