17. He Almost Certainly Masterminded The St Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929, When Seven Rival Gang Members Were Murdered
The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929 was almost certainly orchestrated by Capone - who wanted to kill Bugs Moran, the head of the rival North Side Gang. Capone had his henchmen rent an apartment across the road from the Moran headquarters - and they then raided the premises under the guise of being policeman. On February 14, 1929, they then proceeded to line-up the seven North Side Gang members against the wall, before men with machine guns and shot guns came into the room and massacred the victims. The images of the massacre proved extremely damaging to Capone's reputation and, although he was summoned to testify before a Chicago grand jury, the gangster refused - claiming he was too unwell.
