Having narrowly lost out to John Quincy Adams for the seat in 1824, Jackson and his supporters licked their wounds and formed the Democratic party, meaning he was the first Democrat to serve as Commander In Chief. Apparently during that time Jackson had a pet parrot that he taught to swear. It got too good at it, in fact, according to a report from Jackson's funeral: Before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering, a wicked parrot that was a household pet, got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as to disturb the people and had to be carried from the house.
