20. She Was Britain's First Female Prime Minister... And The Country's Longest-Serving Premier In The 20th Century
When Thatcher moved into Number 10 Downing Street on May 4, 1979, not only did she become Britain's first-ever Prime Minister - she also became the nation's longest-serving premier for 150 years. Already the first female to lead a major political party in any Western nation, Thatcher's Conservative Party won the 1979 election to send her to Downing Street. Yet Thatcher was also re-elected in 1983 and 1987, only stepping down as Prime Minister on November 28, 1990, following 11-and-a-half years in office. That also meant Thatcher became Britain's longest-serving PM since the Earl of Liverpool, who was in office between June 1812 and April 1827.
