Despite becoming Britain's first female Prime Minister in 1979, as little as six years before that Thatcher did not believe that she would see a woman in Number 10 Downing Street during her lifetime. During a 1973 television appearance, Thatcher actually said "I don't think there will be a woman Prime Minister in my lifetime", such was the pessimistic nature by which she viewed the position of females in British politics. In fact, before that in 1970 she also said: "There will not be a woman Prime Minister in my lifetime - the male population is too prejudiced." How wrong she was...
