18. Books Vs. Tablets

One solution to the perils of reading while eating is to make the switch from hard copies to digital on tablets. Nowadays, tablets aren't even all that expensive. You can carry whole libraries around at once, and nobody will be able to tell that you're reading Beowolf instead of playing Minesweeper or Candy Crush. Convenient, eh? Who feels like a dork now? Probably still you. Tablets aren't for everybody. Many pre-21st century bookworms find that there's something so much more satisfying about reading an actual book with covers and pages and dog ears than on a tablet. Besides, as much as spilling cereal or tea on a hard copy will leave the pages warped and...unpleasantly aromatic, at least a spill won't cost you your whole library and tablet.

17. Re-Reading

Part of the appeal of reading is the exploration of unseen places using only the imagination. Life in the real world isn't always exciting; why not immerse yourself in a whole new one? That first time in a good book is a great feeling. It's pretty great the second and third and fourth times as well. Admittedly, there's the possibility of finding a new book that you'd like as much as-or more than-your current favorites, but why take the risk? Just because you know what's going to happen doesn't mean that you can't enjoy it. And memorize page numbers. And dialogue. And verbatim passages. Still, explaining why you can't read that groundbreaking book that's taking the nation by storm because you're in the middle of a tea-stained paperback from 1997 again isn't always easy, which brings us to...
