13. Explaining To Outsiders What Cobs Are
As well as being unable to agree on what to call an alleyway, the British have a fondness for disputing the proper name for a bread roll. Depending on where you are in the country your fillings could be inserted into rolls, baps, stottie loaves, balm cakes, buns and an assortment of other names, all of which would look pretty much the same. In Derby they're known as cobs, although there are some residents who dispute this and believe the correct word is baps. This argument has in fact reached such heights that currently there is a facebook community called "It's called a f***ing Cob! Not a bap, or a roll, it's a COB!!!!" The group has had over 50,000 likes - roughly a fifth of the population of the city. Now that's what you call commitment to preserving the local dialect.
