20 Problems Only People From Sheffield Will Understand

3. The Drainage, Good God, The Drainage

The UK does not do well in extreme weather conditions generally. In the summer there are hosepipe bans whilst the pale, pasty populace soothe themselves with choc-ices, in the winter there are apparent grit shortages which keep people trapped indoors for fear a news cameraman will catch them falling over on the ice, and when it rains? It pours. Doubly so in Sheffield. Rome retains some of the first sewers ever built, back in ancient times, and they still do their job pretty well. Despite supposedly having been constructed more recently, the drains in Sheffield are about a billion times less effective. The slightest downpour results in flooding that would make Noah baulk. Crossing roads become long jump competitions across puddles. Drivers too near the curb become the antichrist. Why.
