4. Having A Famous Drunk Ghost
Legend has it that the Marsden Grottos resident ghost John the Jibber was suspended in a barrel halfway up the cliffs and left to starve for ratting on his mates to HM Customs. Not exactly the nicest way to go but he seems to be making the most of the afterlife - like many inhabitants of Shields, dead or living, the ghost likes his booze and allegedly his spirit can be appeased by leaving out a tankard of ale in the pub for him to drink each night.
