1. Being Called A Geordie Or A Mackem, When You're Actually A Sandancer

Living in the hinterland between Newcastle and Sunderland, it often assumed that the people of South Shields are some kind of Geordie-Mackem hybrid, but we€™re neither really. Technically, we€™re Sandancers but while the origin of that nickname remains debated €“ the nice version claims it€™s because of our lovely beaches and the not-so-nice version says it€™s a racist term for the Yemeni and Asian emigres who settled here in the early 20th century €“ maybe Geordie or Mackem will suffice (depending on your football team loyalty, of course).
