20 Terrifying Internet Urban Legends

14. Jeff The Killer

Another product of the internet hate machine 4chan, Jeff The Killer is one of the more well-known in the creepypasta canon, but his ubiquity has in no way diminished how friggin' terrifying he is. Jeff has inspired jump scare videos, memes, fan fiction and a whole spin-off character in the form of Jane The Killer - who has some, er, interesting fan art of her own out there. Potentially the most famous internet urban legend based on just a single image, Jeff first made his appearance as a heavily-edited photo on the 4chan message boards with the words GO TO SLEEP written in blood red text. Which we assume was ironic, cos even catching a glimpse of that horrifying, disfigured visage is enough for us to swear off dreamland for a week. Don't worry, though, because there is more to Jeff The Killer. And his backstory actually makes him all the more nightmarish, so, proceed with caution, we guess? The gist of it is that a kid woke up in the middle of the night because his window was open, although he remembered closing it before he went to sleep. Shrugging it off, he returns to bed with it closed once more only to see a flash of light from between the curtains, heralding the arrival of a pale, inhuman...thing crawling over to him, eyes black and lifeless, a terrifying distended smile, hovering over him with a butcher's knife and whispering "go to sleep". Welp.
