20 Terrifying Internet Urban Legends

13. Squidward€™s Suicide

The corruption of something innocent and familiar is a sure-fire way to the terror cortex for this generation, what with everybody putting so much stock in the pop culture they consumed as kids. Seeing the things you see as epitomising your childhood being transformed into a horrific, terrifying story just heightens the creepiness of certain urban legends, as is the case with Zalgo and Candle Cove. Not content with messing up us adults, mind, the internet has gone ahead and spoilt the cartoons of today's kids, with the Squidward's Suicide series of YouTube videos being the best example. Purporting to be a lost episode of the series Spongebob Squarepants, the videos didn't actually show said animation (thank the maker) but instead featured a recounting of its production over the image of supporting character Squidward - he's a squid - with realistic, red eyes. According to the narrator he was an intern at Nickelodeon whilst the episode was being made, who sat down to watch a rough cut of an episode that started off normally before descending into David Lynch territory, with characters sitting around weeping whilst eerie music played, and the photo of a dead kid was flashed up on screen. Yup. That episode can just remain lost, thanks.
