That classic, original design of glass Coca-Cola bottle - the sort that, like American love, you can't but any more, apparently - was created because the first, standard version would often lose their labels when placed in coolers, meaning Coke didn't stand out from its competitors. The shapelier version kept the label in place and was inspired by either the coca plant or the kola nut, which were the ingredients Coke was named after.
7. Coke Ruined India
Oh yeah, besides Cuba and North Korea flat-out not selling it, the only other country Coca-Cola has really had a problem with is India. That's because the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) of New Delhi discovered that water used to make their drinks contained cancerous pesticides some thirty times the amount of permitted under EU regulations. There were a bunch of lawsuits, sales dropped, and the company admitted they severely added to the country's already worrying water scarcity by using 3.12 litres of water per litre of Coke. Bit wasteful, that.
