20 Totally Bizarre Places You Won't Believe Actually Exist

7. Sedlec Ossuary - Czech Republic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW_gZ83fnVU The Sedlec Ossuary is a Roman Catholic chapel, situated in the Czech Republic, houses bones belonging to anywhere between 40,000 and 70,000 people. In the 13th century, an Abbot returned from the Holy Land with a handful of earth. We're not really sure how he managed to keep it intact all the way back, but that's besides the point. The Abbot sprinkled it around the cemetery and the chapel soon became a popular choice for burials. The site remained a burial site for over a hundred years until the cemetery needing enlarging to cope with all of the burials, causing the current bones to be dug up and stacked in the chapel. Over three hundred years later, a woodcarver was given the job of putting the stacks of bones in order, leading to the display that can be seen in the chapel today. He also bleached all of the bones in order to give them a uniform look. Although the story of the Sedlec Ossuary isn't particularly bizarre, there isn't really a lot that could be thought of as creepier than a room full of human bones.
