5. Capuchin Crypt - Rome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlK0frpbh5s If the Sedlec Ossuary hasn't already terrified you, then the Capuchin Crypt just might. Amongst the beautiful architecture of Rome lie several tiny chapels containing the skeletons of thousands of bodies. If that wasn't horrible enough, some bones are nailed to the walls while others hang down from the ceilings. During the 1600's it was common practice that when a monk died, the one that had been buried the longest would be removed from the coffin to make way for the recently deceased, and the bones of the old monk would then be hung on the walls as decoration. Many visitors to the chapels have noted its disturbing nature, often perceiving the whole experience as extremely bizarre, especially considering that there are six rooms in the chapel, one of which is dedicated solely to leg and thigh bones, while the other is only for pelvises. Despite its macabre nature, the crypt isn't supposed to be perceived as horrific, but instead as a reminder of our own mortality, however we don't really think that's how many people would view a room of bones.
