14. Pripyat - Ukraine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7MU3M7EGkI Pripyat is an abandoned city in the Ukraine. It was evacuated and deserted just two days after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Before the disaster, Pripyat was home to many employees of the nearby nuclear power plant. At this time, it was believed that nuclear power plants were relatively safe to live close to, and so the zone near to the plant was an ordinary residential area. But in 1986 disaster struck when an explosion occurred at the plant and a huge quantity of radioactive particles were released into the atmosphere causing imminent threat to not only those nearby but also those living further away in other parts of Europe. Since its abandonment, the city has remained deserted and has become well known as a ghost town. In more recent years, after many years of deliberation it has been decided that the area is now safe to visit and several companies allow guided tours as they believe that the radiation level is no longer dangerous to those visiting the site. Pripyat has become so widely known as a famous ghost town due to its increasing cultural appearances in movies and video games. It has most recently been used in the video game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, as well as inspiring 2012 horror film Chernobyl Diaries which is set in the empty city.
