15. Pendle Hill - Lancashire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu7yRqoLxLc At first glance, Pendle Hill looks like any part of English countryside but what it is actually known for is the location of some of the most famous witch trials in English history which took place in the 17th century. It was around this time that local people noticed strange events happening in the area; a huge number of cattle died with no obvious cause of death and many people died from mysterious illnesses. Soon afterwards, twelve inhabitants of the surrounding area of Pendle Hill, nine women and two men were accused of murder by use of witchcraft. In 1612 the suspects were tried, resulting in the verdict that ten of them were found guilty and subsequently hanged, leaving the area with an eerie atmosphere. Despite these events taking places hundreds of years ago, there is still a strange air that surrounds Pendle Hill and its current inhabitants. Many local people have claimed that they are wary of even mentioning the trials for fear of upsetting the spirits of the witches, while some mediums say that they have even been in touch with the witches, who say that they don't want to be disturbed. So next time you think about going for a nice walk in the countryside, perhaps check the history of it first before coming up against any angry ghosts!
