21 Problems Only People Who Work In A Kitchen Will Understand

You know nothing of the back-of-house.

Whether you're a kitchen porter, food-prep worker, dishwasher or the chef in charge of it all; you'll know the organised (and sometimes not so organised) chaos that comes with working in a kitchen. Unless it's an open kitchen, no one sees what really goes on behind the scenes; all they see is the servers rushing in and out of the back. And if they did know, they'd be a damn load kinder. Your eyes are well and truly opened to the painfully fussy traits our species have adapted when you work in a kitchen. No longer do people enter a restaurant and order what's on the menu; oh no, now customers want to alter every single thing that's on there. They want their crusts quite crusty but not too crusty and then complain it's burnt; they want their omelettes eggless and their chicken as vegetarian and cancer-free as possible. To be honest, we're pretty sure they sit down in the establishment with the sole purpose of being as exasperating as possible. It's not quite like Gordon Ramsey's vicious dictatorship in every cook's room, but some days the rage is definitely on a par with that of Hell's Kitchen. You'll only understand what follows if you've been there, and if you're still there - we salute you.

21. The Horror Of Cleaning This Beast Every Day

If you're the designated dishwasher, then it's the horror of looking at this beast day in, day out... and probably seeing it in your dreams too. Any chefs that have to clean it out themselves, we feel you: those places with overnight cleaners don't know what a beautiful thing they've got.

20. When Someone Calls In Sick And You're Left To Fight The Battle Alone

You better hope you magically sprout eight new arms before the first wave of hungry customers start to accumulate, soldier.
