9. Londoners Believing The North East Is Desolate Wasteland
Where's the best place for fracking? According to Lord Howell, former energy secretary and George Osbourne's thoughtful father-in-law, the controversial gas production should be done in the "desolate" North East. Ah, of course. It's all fog, chimneys and industrial wastelands up here, full of feral children running about the region like a gloomy Catherine Cookson novel. It would surprise a proportion of people in London just how beautiful the North East can be: elegant Georgian buildings in Newcastle city centre, the Northumberland coast, Durham Cathedral, Alnwick, and Britain's Best Street... ...and yes, the Great British public voted that. It's not so "grim up North" - we'll have you Southerners know.
