11. Churchill Loved Cigars So Much They Have Subsequently Been Named In His Honour... But His Mother Tried To Make Him Quit At The Age Of 15
Iconic images of Churchill with his hats, V-signs and cigars are firmly engrained in the British public's memory. In fact, so iconic were the former Prime Minister's Parejo cigars that he has had some named after him. Churchill cigars are 18cm in length and 20mm in width and bear the former British Prime Minister's name on them. However, his mother tried to make Churchill give up the habit - when he was only 15 years old! In a letter to him, she wrote:
"If you knew how foolish and how silly you look doing it, you would give up - at least for a few years."
In a bid to entice him further, she also told Churchill that if he gave up smoking for six months he could have a pony and a gun. Although he originally agreed, Churchill quickly reneged on the deal and went back to puffing away on those famous cigars.
