Although Churchill was suggested as a potential nominee for the Nobel Prize in Peace in 1945, the former British Prime Minister never actually claimed this award. He did, however, receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953, making him the first and to date only British Prime Minister to be given this accolade. Churchill was recognised for "his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values". His literary works include his six-volume memoir The Second World War, as well the four-volume A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.
