Recently married to Tonks who gave him a son meant that he had family to protect and a lot to live for. Lupin was one of the most grounded characters and since his first appearance in the Prisoner of Azkaban, he was more of a father figure to Harry before anyone else at this time and even though he stepped aside for Sirius, he was still a big influence on Harry.
