25 Most Significant Inventions In Human History
13. A Centralized Government System
For countless centuries, human leadership was one of the biggest causes of conflict. Empires rose and fell, leaders were raised to the throne and overthrown, and in especially large civilizations, when there were multiple people with power, it was impossible for a country to become unified.
This is why a single, central government was such a useful invention. Brought to Europe by the Mongols during Genghis Khan’s conquest, those countries that were defeated brought this idea in, and it was those countries that developed a more centralized (and thus more organized) system of governance. Under his conquest, he brought multiple countries under one cohesive political environment. That made it easier to enforce order in his empire, and made life relatively safer and easier for common people.
As another example, consider the fictitious Game of Thrones universe. Under the unified King, there is (relative) order and stability, whereas when there are five kings, each one carving out their own territory and seeking to maximize their own self-interest, the common people suffer to a much greater degree at the hands of multiple power-hungry lesser powers vying for greater control.
The countries that have a longer tradition of centralized government have been, on the whole, more stable from an internal political perspective, and it was easier for them to make decisions that affect the whole country.
