11. The Automobile
There was a time when the majority of people traveled long distance either on horseback, in a horse-drawn carriage, or on foot. Indeed, they were at the mercy of animal strength, as there wasn’t anything mechanical that could transport them with minimal physical effort.
And then the automobile was created.
Though they started off slowly and possessed many limitations initially, automobiles became essential to everyday life. With a much more simplified mode of transportation, people could do everything more easily and with greater comfort. From daily commutes to transporting goods to going on vacation to moving, tasks that were once considered almost impossible could now be achieved at the turn of a key.
Cars are symbolic of modern life, status, power, freedom, and success. It's considered standard practice to be able to drive your own car, and entire industries have come exploded from the creation of the automobile. From putting the car together, to detailing it, to washing it, to insuring it, to maintaining it, cars have become almost as crucial to one's life as a house.
Furthermore, the first cars later developed into pick-up trucks, vans, and tractor-trailers. With those vehicles, and transporting goods in general became even easier that using only cars. Modern cities are being re-organized to fit cars, buses and trucks, as they are critical to moving goods and people around, and are essential to many other industries.
