The Black Saturday bushfires burned across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday the 7th of February in 2009 and are generally considered to be Australia's worst ever natural disaster. Victoria's native wildlife was severely affected by the event and, in the aftermath, a famous photograph emerged of a fireman giving water to a koala - dubbed Sam by the media - who had lost her home in the fire.
