The Large Hadron Collider (or LHC for short) was a huge scientific breakthrough. It is the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, and the largest single machine in the world, and it was built to prove or disprove the existence of the theorized Higgs boson particle. The machine went live in 2008 with some claiming there was a risk that it could create a black hole that would destroy the world!
