West Africa witnessed the largest and deadliest disease the world has ever seen when Ebola killed at least 7,000 people and over 13,000 were infected across Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Mali. Neighbouring countries also faced risk as the virus quickly spread across borders.

Those who weren't infected also suffered as children became orphans. Schools and health facilities for pregnant women closed and vital routine immunisation programmes were halted because of the emergency.
