4. The Box - Dušan Kastelic

“The Box” is a visual treat from the off, with characters animated in a fluid, but altogether disgusting way. The lighting of the piece is exceptional, drawing in all the pained expressions from the figures faces and lighting up the smaller figure in a devious way. It’s made all the more disturbing by the moans and wails of these rooted, flat headed beings, who seem to be annoyed by the actions of the “odd one out”

Kastelic describes the population of the box to be miserable and bored and are aggravated by the “baby” and its cheerful disposition. As the smaller figure grows, so to does their frustration until he ends up growing over them, a powerful expression of overcoming hate and intolerance with positivity. All of this is tied together with sound design Mateja Staric which is exemplarily in its weirdness.

A visual treat, and disturbing in all the right ways.
