5 Best Chuck Palahniuk Books

3. Invisible Monsters (1999)

Invisible Monsters Cover

This is the third novel to be released by Palahniuk, but it was the first that he tried to get published. It was initially turned down due to its dark subject matter, but after the success of Fight Club, Palahniuk's work was seen as the next hot topic and so the novel was released. Once again, this novel is narrated by an unnamed character, who goes by various names throughout the story and the story is told in a non-linear form, so the story jumps around in time as the main protagonist recounts the various events in her life; most importantly the time she is shot through the jaw whilst sat in her car. This event seems to be the catalyst for the rest of the novel, but it is not the most shocking revelation recounted during the story. Much like Palahniuk's other work, it is hard to give away too much of the plot without ruining the whole story, but this novel contains some of his most ridiculous characters; the Rhea Sisters are some of greatest caricatures you will ever have the pleasure to read. Chuck Palahniuk was released in 2012 as Invisible Monsters Remix in which he included extra segments that weren't included in the original, and allowed the reader to read the new work a 'choose your own adventure' feel so they worked their way through the novel in a different order. Also, if you aren't in the mood to read properly, then there is a graphic novel available produced by comic artist KGZ.
