For better or worse, there's a lot going on during autumn. We've just had Halloween - that one night of the year when the neighbourhood enters an ephemerally apocalyptic state, chaos unfolding in the streets in the name of what ultimately amounts to polite door-to-door mugging - and pretty soon after there's Guy Fawkes' Night in the UK, and Thanksgiving for our American cousins. Any excuse to build a massive bonfire or gorge on a turkey, eh?

All of these are just pre-drinks before the glut of Christmas parties which begin immediately after the last Thursday in November. If a shindig isn't the best place to enjoy a glass or two of whiskey at any time of year, then I'm not sure what is. It's sanctioned, and basically encouraged, so why not? 'Tis the season to be jolly...
