5 Things About America That The UK Doesn't Understand
4. American Food Portions
Americans and food go together like calories and large bottoms. See, at some point, it became bad not to stuff your face with as much food as possible. It’s not uncommon for restaurants to lure in eaters by having stupidly large food challenges in order to drum up a little free promotion.
In a country where bigger is always better, it’s never more exemplified than in the food. In a nation where we waste food regularly, we’ve gained a mentality of “This food isn’t for sustenance anymore, this is the pride of a nation at stake. If I don’t consume an entire pound of beef and half a pound of bacon on this burger, I clearly don’t love that flag.” Excess represents success.
So how did we get here? After WWII, or as we call it here, "America's boot up Evil Europe's ass Part 2", farming methods became more advanced. At the same time, the government subsidized those farms to produce more food. What followed was a lot more than what was needed, but restaurants got in on it too. Instead of selling you just the amount of food you needed for a smaller price, they sold you more food at a slightly higher price. That trend continued to a point where now you can go to restaurants and get a pizza that's bigger across than you are tall.
