5 Things About America That The UK Doesn't Understand
3. American Food Products
That said, we do have some weird ass food here. Cheese in a tube, potted meat, whole chickens in a can, what the hell?
OK, canned cheese is gross, but it’s probably just bathroom grout that got a little dye in it by accident, and someone just assumed it was cheese. Potted meat is a can of what appears to be a pâté type food, but is actually the meat they scrape off the floor because it was too nasty for hot dogs. Add a pound of salt, and let it congeal until even animals won’t go near it, and it’s ready for store shelves. For lard’s sake, we just had Taco Bell release a taco whose shell is just a giant chicken patty.
So, why is stuff like this a thing? A lot of reasons, really. First, America is a nation of immigrants. With new people and new culture came new foods. Jewish families married into Chinese Families. The child from that family married into a German Cuban family. With each new mixing of ideas came new mixing of foods. Then there's science giving us new things like carbonated water, synthetic flavorings, powdered drink mix, and new food storage methods.
Americans like nothing more than to experiment with food, so eventually you'll have someone discover that you can use one of the byproducts of crude oil to make the cream filling in Twinkies. As for the chicken in a can, sometimes mistakes are made, and it's just too late to do anything about it.
