Historically, people have done some pretty weird stuff in the pursuit of eternal youth.

Cleopatra bathed in asses' milk, a practice that seems almost normal compared to Elizabeth Báthory, who reportedly preferred a long soak in the blood of virgins. In ancient Japanese mythology, the secret to eternal youth was to eat a mermaid (although Japanese mermaids were a little different from ours).

Many ancient beliefs involve ingesting materials in order to gain their essence. Unfortunately for them, the most immortal thing they could think of was metal, specifically mercury. This, as we all know, is not super-awesome for the human body and generally has the opposite effect of glorious immortality.

Vampires, however, might've been on to something...
