6 Big Things You'll Learn When Online Dating

6. Looks Can Be Deceiving

It seems to make sense that everyone is expected to post their pictures alongside their profile on these sites, so you can get some idea of whether there€™s a physical attraction there. Yes, yes, it€™d be nice to believe you could fall desperately in love with someone€™s encyclopaedic knowledge of obscure ancient Mayan practices or their preternatural ability to name every Marvel character ever created and see past what they look like, but none of us are really quite that enlightened. However, even with this requirement in place, there are no guarantees. Sure, we all want our photos to be flattering €“ very few of us are posting shots of ourselves sat on the sofa in our pants at 4am, eating noodles with our hands as we binge-watch everything on Netflix. However, there€™s a world of difference between a picture taken in nice lighting after you€™ve brushed your hair and a photo that was snapped back in 2005 when you had more hair and less stomach. There's little worse in going to meet someone you think is really hot only to discover that the last decade hasn't been kind. It's less being incredibly shallow and more feeling like you've been a victim of false advertising. Other things to beware: People who don€™t have a single shot of them alone, thus making it impossible to tell who they even are without engaging in Sherlockian levels of deduction; anyone who has their mouth clamped tightly closed in every photograph, as they're either hiding bad teeth or vampire fangs; photos of someone wherein they're floating three inches off the ground in a swanky setting and casting no shadow - that's a sure sign they're either a bad photoshopper or an interdimensional demon on the hunt for souls to swallow.
