6 Forgotten Gems Of The Internet

6. Weebl & Bob

Ah, Weebl & Bob; quite possibly the most simplistic of all the animated cartoon style comics around, it was also undoubtedly one of the quirkiest and outright funniest of the lot. What started out as, admittedly awfully animated, poorly voiced and indeed ropey stories as a whole, the purple two weebling (get it!?) egg-like characters first started mumbling on about an obsession for pie and the obtaining of said delicious pastry way back in June of 2002. If nothing else, that's a stat which makes this writer feel too old for comfort. As the animation and jokes got better, the website gained a huge following, thanks largely to absurdist humour and a talent for picking on pop culture and fads in truly unique ways. For example, one of their most popular episodes, entitled Pastry manages to combine the enormous Justin Timberlake hit of the time with the national obsession of ikea furniture shopping. It is most definitely bizarre. Other episodes would feature lampoons of films as a direct response to what the creator Jonti Picking saw as a lacklustre effort of advertising on behalf of the Cadbury's Creme Egg campaign. Yes, you read that correctly. The man was so deeply moved by poor Creme Egg adverts that he made a series of animations about it. Dedication indeed. What's more, even if you didn't recognise the stars of the site in their usual form, you may well recall a certain Anchor spreadable advert which the characters appeared in. If that's not fame, I don't know what is. Furthermore, some of the other toons on the site also made it huge virally, such as Magical Trevor and, of course, the Badger Badger Badger song. Chances are you've heard at least one of them, whether you wanted to or not. Sadly, the episodes of Weebl & Bob are few and far between now, even having a hiatus that lasted over a year until last November. But their entire series is still very much available to watch, so go waste a couple of hours on something utterly ridiculous.
