6 Reasons Why Intervention In Syria Has Not Happened

3. Protection Of Russia And China

The reason that the UN has not been able to impose sanctions against the Syrian government is Russia and China. They have vetoed every attempt of this. Russia has long political, economic and military ties with Syria and has been very reluctant to cut these. They have even been accused of trying to assist the Syrian government against rebel forces. China have an friendly history with Syria too. This comes mainly in the form of economic relations. Proper conduct over Syria by the UN is made impossible by these two nations€™ national over international interest. On this very day, Russia and China have again vetoed the vote on UN sanctions for the third time. A move that UK foreign secretary William Hague has described as €œinexcusable and indefensible€. Russia claims that these sanctions would have opened the way for military action. A weak claim considering the many tyrants in recent years that have been allowed to live in complete disregard of imposed UN sanctions.
