6 Reasons Why Intervention In Syria Has Not Happened

5. Incompetencies Of The United Nations

As previously mentioned, the UN have failed with their peace envoy and not succeeded in passing any sanctions against the Syrian government. Even if one of the two countries (Russia and China) vetoed the vote for sanctions, this would still be enough to cancel the vote. There is no good in one of five countries being able to monopolise such vital and necessary decisions. Even if UN sanctions are passed, would this work? Previously, the UN have failed countries such as Rwanda, Bosnia and Somalia and the world has seen some of the world€™s worst atrocities happen by taking delayed or no action. The most recent example of this is Iraq. Saddam Hussein was completely incompatible with international law and had countless UN sanctions to his name. Even so, this wicked and disgraceful tyrant was allowed to exist. Not just exist, but escape the use of chemical weapons, genocide, invasion and complete and absolute oppression of the Iraqi people. Therefore, the UN has much to prove and needs to back sanctions up with consequences and complete commitment.
