In the data age, it is becoming more and more apparent that, if you want to monitor the public's health, you'll need an app for that.

Now that we're tracking everything from our food to our heart rates, why stop at uploading the data to your smartphone? Because, let's be honest here, who has ever filled out that doctor's questionnaire accurately? My GP judges me hard enough at the amount of alcoholic units is pretend to consume per week, let alone the actual figure.

Knowledge, however, is power, and if we could share our health data straight to our medical records, we would be able to treat everybody much more efficiently and effectively. What's more, this kind of trackable information could be the difference between life and death, if you rock up to hospital in a state that renders you unable to inform your doctor that your heart rate has been elevated for months, or that your blood sugar is dangerously low

As well as raw data, some researchers are also developing a type of smart pill that can track whether a patient is taking their medication properly. Small, completely digestible chips are implanted into the medications, and the acid in your stomach acts as a battery to power it. Not only will it let your doc know you've taken your meds, but different chips in different pills could detect any dangerous interactions.

Your health is about to get much smarter.
