It seems pretty Orwellian, but some experts now agree that some kind of implantable ID is almost an inevitability.

On the one hand, it would be a boon for security, there would be fewer missing people - plus you'd never have to sit with the diet coke of shame after forgetting to take your ID to the pub. The military applications are many, giving us the ability to track personnel and even easily identify them should the worst happen.

On the other hand, this does have the whiff of dystopian totalitarianism about it. You could argue that, with the proliferation of location-tracking smartphones and big data society, our lives are already tracked and traced and quantified to the same extent, but there's something about having it put under your skin that makes it feel much more sinister.

Would you get chipped for the convenience, or would it make you feel like somebody's pet?
