In our constant battle with terrible diseases like dementia, we have developed all kinds of chemical interventions in the form of drugs. Future treatments, however, could be distinctly more digital.

When you think of brain implants and microchips, you might picture a sci-fi cybernetically enhanced youth, but there are those who think that we could use the technology to help preserve the memories of those suffering from degenerative diseases. What some scientists propose, is that with a little more research, we could actually "back up" failing memories.

Now, it probably wouldn't be in the form of a removable SD card or whatever, allowing you to upload your memories to the cloud, but at least one expert believes that we could use a digital implant to help replace the lost cells in the brain that cause memory loss. The device would support the signals passing through the hippocampus.

It could be that, in the future, we treat and enhance our brains with prosthetics as well as drugs.
