Apple's raids on 3D sensor and Augmented Reality technologies fit neatly with another rumour swirling around their grapevine. Late last year and early this year, Apple posted a load of job listings, including openings for 'Game Engineer' and 'VR/AR Programmer'. Under the VR Programmer listing, the description said:
"Play a part in the next revolution in user experience by delivering cinematic user interfaces and simplifying human interface in fundamental ways... This engineer will create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing".
There you have it, Apple has itself said the phrase 'Virtual Reality' in a job listing, which should be enough to send tingles of excitement down the spine of anyone who's seen what the VR headsets of today are already capable of. It's also possible that whatever VR/AR headset Apple is working on, it might not be related to video games. One of the patents that Apple inherited from PrimeSense involved an 'Adaptive Projector' - a pair of glasses that offers a digital display over your everyday vision - sort of like Google Glass, but hopefully designed in such a way that doesn't make you look like a complete doofus.
