In 1965, an unnamed Scottish man stopped eating, and wouldn't start again for over a year. The 27-year-old man was described as "grossly obese", weighing in at around 456 lbs or 207 kgs and had grown so sick of being fat that he rocked up to Dundee Royal Infirmary and announced that he was going to stop eating, and that they may as well monitor him for it. True to his word, he spent a year and 17 days living off nothing but water, vitamins and his own body fat. Amazingly, he seemed to suffer very few ill-effects, and was even allowed home after a few months, continuing the experiment as an outpatient. By the end of the experiment, he weighed 180 lbs and was perfectly healthy. The case notes even thank him for his "cheerful cooperation", which is no mean feat considering most people get grouchy after the first hunger pangs hit.
