7 Weirdest iPhone Rumours

5. iOS Waterproof Upgrade

So this was less of a rumour, more of a sophisticated prank that had far more people fooled than the human race would like to admit. The denizens of controversial forum 4Chan mocked up adverts, Facebook posts and other social media in Apple's signature style stating that iOS7 included a feature that would force iPhones and iPads to conduct a rapid emergency shutdown upon detecting water on the touchscreen or TouchID fingerprint sensor, leaving the phone safe from damage and allowing it to be returned to a functioning state after the phone had dried out. Surely no one would fall for that, right? Wrong. Lots of people fell for it, in fact, a huge number of people fell for it. Apple's support lines and Genius Bars were inundated with calls, queries and irate customers who had destroyed their phones testing out this new "feature". Heartbreakingly enough, this prank emerged just after the iPhone 5S had hit the shelves, meaning poor folks with absolutely brand new phones on 24 month contracts had ruined their devices. The prank made news around the world and very soon the adverts became viral, hurtling around social media and news sites at a pandemic rate. It's fair to say that those 4Chan users who created the prank were laughing into their keyboards for months at this, having successfully duped the world into dunking their phones into glasses of water.
