7 Weirdest iPhone Rumours

4. The Teardrop iPhone 5

Every year, without fail, ahead of the iPhone announcement there will be a slew of photoshopped images of what the next phone may look like. Most of the time they act in responses to rumours leaked about potential design ideas and they tend to run with a distinct theme which makes some logical sense (some of the theorised designs have borne a striking resemblance to the actual announced product too), but sometimes a rumour hits that causes some weird design ideas to come out. Before the iPhone 5 was announced, a rumour hit the net that it would take a design cue from the iPod touch and feature a teardrop chassis, thinner at one end than the other. Given Apple's track record of miniaturising and shaving millimetres off their products, this rumour took a lot of people in and the designs came thick and fast. Designs were released based on the Apple magic mouse, with a thicker middle and tapered ends, then some came out with an alarmingly thin bottom and a slightly thicker (but impossibly slim) top. Most ridiculous was the actual Teardrop shape pictured above, clearly not meant as a serious thought but it did cause some heated debate on the forums. The problem with this kind of rampant theorising is, for all the designs look nice and professional, they're all impossible. The iPhone 5/5S is about as thin as current technology will allow for and if you look inside one, there is not a millimetre of wasted space. For all the concept of a teardrop form factor enthused the Apple faithful, it was a physical impossibility, but such was the buy in from large parts of the fanbase there was disappointment and criticism when the more conservative form of the iPhone 5 was announced. It just shows that you shouldn't believe everything you read online.
