8 Crazy Mysteries That Were Solved On Reddit
3. Grateful Doe Hitchhiker
In 1995, a 19-year old-hitchhiker traveling from a Grateful Dead concert was picked up by 21-year-old student Michael Hager, who was on his way to his mother's house in South Carolina. Sometime following the pair's meeting, Hager crashed his Volkswagen van into a tree, resulting in the deaths of both men.
When Hager's family came to identify their son's remains they did not recognise the hitchhiker, and no one came forward to report him missing, earning the hitchhiker the moniker Grateful Doe.
Years later an Australian music fan named Layla Betts came across the story of the deceased hitchhiker online and began posting about him on Reddit leading to the creation of r/GratefulDoe.
A man who had seen the posts would later come forward remarking that the reconstructions of the Grateful Doe resembled his former roommate, James Callahan. Following photos of Callahan being posted online, his mother came forward to report her son missing from 20 years prior, with police later confirming that the Grateful Doe was, in fact, Callahan.
