8 Harry Potter Characters JK Rowling Really Didn't Have To Kill

5. Dobby

Dobby went from slightly irritating stray to fully fledged family pet over the course of the series, and nobody wants to see their little furry friend take a throwing-knife in the chest. The big-eared, bug-eyed, self-harming house elf first arrived on the scene in The Chamber of Secrets, in which he tried to warn Harry that there was a plan afoot to open the chamber and set Salazar Slytherin€™s monster free to reek havoc in Hogwarts. This would not go down well with his masters The Malfoys, though the joke would be on them come the end of that book as Harry not only succeeded in slaying the Basilisk, but managed to trick old Lucious Malfoy into freeing Dobby to boot. Thus began Dobby€™s time as a free elf, which is exactly how he died, popping up at Malfoy manor to rescue Harry and his cohort in their hour of need. I mean, I know Griphook had to survive to help plan the Gringotts break in, and Ollivander knew too much about the Elder Wand to be sacrificed, but if Bellatrix€™s dagger had veered slightly in the direction of Dean Thomas I wouldn€™t have had any objections. €œSuch a beautiful place, to be with friends. Dobby is glad to be with his friend, Harry Potter.€ Wow. I€™m not quite sure how Harry managed to live with himself after that one.
