8 Phobias That Are Guaranteed To Make You Feel Uncomfortable
7. Anginophobia
Anginophobia is the extreme fear of choking. The sufferer will be paranoid that they may suffer with angina, narrowness of the throat and/ or death from the act of choking. They often experience high levels of anxiety even thinking about experiencing these things and they may worry to the point of actively avoiding anything that could make them choke. This can include avoiding solid foods or large portions.
In most cases, the sufferer in question has gone through a traumatic event of choking that has caused them to think that this will happen again. This can often develop in to fear of anxiety itself as the panic causes their inability to breath properly.
Anginophobia is categorised as a specific phobia or a simple phobia, meaning the patients fear a situation, object or activity. In this case, it is the act of choking that makes the sufferer so scared. This can lead to a fear of dying, fainting or losing control which in turn can cause the person to withdraw from social and family gatherings to avoid being more exposed to the fear in a public situation.
