8 Strangest Stories About The Winchester Mansion

4. An Earthquake Disaster

The Hollywood Treatment
San Jose Public Library

The influence of supernatural forces in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake is up for debate, but either way the Winchester mansion wasn't let off lightly. The house had its seven stories reduced to four, as the central tower was entirely demolished in the tremors. It was never rebuilt and the only evidence left of its existence is in a 1900 postcard kept in the San Jose public library.

Fortunately there were no other major casualties to the house, although Sarah Winchester found herself deep in the rubble. Her habit of sleeping in different rooms didn’t bring her luck this time, as the room she slept in was hit badly by the earthquake. Her staff found her trapped hours later and according to legend, she boarded up the remains of that room immediately after, sure that evil spirits must have been responsible for the destruction.
