9 Extraordinary Superpowers That Literally Everybody Has
7. You Can Detect Molecular Changes With Your Ears
No, really. Close your eyes and listen to the two recordings below of water being poured into a glass, can you detect a difference? Which one do you think is hot and which is cold? (I say close your eyes because people have commented on the recordings, which will give the game away) Glass 1: https://soundcloud.com/condiment-junkie/glass-1-hot-or-cold Glass 2: https://soundcloud.com/condiment-junkie/glass-2-hot-or-cold If you said that Glass 1 was cold and Glass 2 was hot, then you were absolutely right. The vast majority of people, between 80-90%, will be able to do this, but what exactly are we hearing? Turns out that you are actually hearing the difference in the molecules in the water. Colder water has a higher viscosity that hot water, which affects how it pours. Hot water also tends to form more bubbles as it is poured which affects the frequency. The reason you are able to instinctively tell them apart is because you've been unconsciously training your brain to do it every time you pour yourself a glass of water or make a cup of tea. Neat, huh?
