8. You Can Heal Your Mother... From The Womb
Turns out that pregnancy isn't the one-sided relationship we used to think it was. The good thing about being
in utero is that you have unlimited access to lots of lovely stem cells in the placenta. Foetuses predominantly use these for building arms and legs and faces and so on, but the little darlings can also send them to their mothers if she needs them. During pregnancy, a small number of stem cells cross over into the mother's system and can remain in the skin, liver, brain and spleen for years. These cells have been shown to be able to
repair and protect the mother's body from damage and disease and are even thought to be able to protect her against cancer. It makes sense if you think about it, the wee bairn needs its mum in tip top condition if she is going to look after it, so it sends her little packets of healing stem cells to ensure there's someone around to heat up its baby food.
